Anna Demko's Genealogy

The first page was about the genealogy of Peter Andrew Mello (the yellow branch of the tree above). Now we'll look at that of Anna Demko, his wife (the green branch).

For much of this, there isn't a lot of official information; church records are few, and census information is usually lacking. What you see is what you get. All children that we know of are listed, so if you see only one child's name, your guess is as good as mine whether the couple had more children. Much of this comes from a Slovak genealogist working on this overseas.

(The name/name is because of the stylized letter at the beginning of the name in the church record of Jacob's marriage. See below.)

*That Jacob has his mother's last name may indicate that she was single when he was born (probably widowed). By Jacob's wedding, however (see church record below), she's married to a Joannes Tarabtsak.

Maria Kanyuk/Hanyuk married Vaszily/Basilus Demko
-No church records in the village at this time.
-Basilus Sr. died in 1874 at age 42. Maria then married Peter Madzin in 1875. There are no known children from this union.

• He must have died young, because there is another John born to this couple a few years later.

• Came to America c. 1883 per his Naturalization papers.

• Came to America sometime after his brother John.

 *This John will go on to marry Susan (Zsuanna) Yuhas below.
-A total of eight children are shown in the Greek Catholic register of Vysna Olsava.

 The man standing is John Demko, husband of Susan Yuhas and son of Basilus Demko Sr. and Maria Kanyuk/Hanyuk. The children are his two oldest, John Jr. and Anna. The seated couple are Anna's godparents. I have no picture of Susan Yuhas; but years later, Anna wrote on the back of this picture that her godmother "looks like my mother."
